What to Wear this Summer

We’ve had summer-like temps around here lately and I have felt rather unprepared – I was out of sunscreen, my sandals were packed away, and I really felt like I had nothing to wear. I haven’t worn my “normal” summer clothes in 2 years now (I was juuuuuust post-partum last summer so my regular clothes weren’t happening just yet) so I wanted to find a couple pieces for summer to freshen up my summer wardrobe. Here are a few things I’ve found perfect to be wearing (and using) all summer long!

 summer-must-haves

1. I love a straw bag for the summer as a catch all for my stuff, kid stuff, and all the extras for summer like sunscreen and hats. This Mar y Sol Caracas tote could not be cuter! The price-tag is a bit much for me, but I have a DIY for the blog for a similar straw bag look in the near future!

2. I jumped on the romper bandwagon years ago (if you remember) and when I saw this jumpsuit with straps from Zara I knew it would be adorable dressed down with a tee for the playground or dressed up with a collared shirt and heels for dinner out. A couple notes: these look a little like a wrestler’s outfit when it’s not on you, but don’t be afraid – so. cute. on. It also runs long, I had to do a little sewing and shorten my straps but taking out like 6″ of fabric.

3. Another pair of sandals I’m dying for this summer are these paz two strap sandals from Loeffler Randall – adorable, right?

4. These cotton faille pull-on shorts from J. Crew are the best. They run a little big, but I always size up in shorts anyway, so I didn’t mind. Wear them to the beach over your suit or with a tucked in chambray for a more put together look.

5. For our birthdays in the fall my husband and I got each other new sunglasses, I opted for these Maui Jim cliff house aviators and I love them!

6. American Eagle is killing it in the summer sandal department – yes, AE! I personally love these ankle tie gladiator sandals and at $35 you can’t beat the price.

7. We are constantly setting up picnics and/or little areas for M to crawl around while we’re at the playground so I like to have a fun, bright towel with me at all times. Turkish towels are so soft and colorful like this turkish-t beach candy towel from Madewell. I love the colors together!

What are you summer must-haves?

Cold Weather Must Haves – Sweaters

Last week I started a cold weather must haves series and shared with you all my favorite scarves. This week I wanted to share the best sweaters for cold weather. We all want to stay warm without feeling and looking super frumpy – which is tricky to do! You of course have to shop for your body type. I have narrow shoulders so turtlenecks are good for me. If you have a larger bust a nice v-neck would be great. Cardigans are good for all and even better for layering!

1. I recently got this iceblock turtleneck sweater when Madewell sale items were an extra 40% off and I LOVE it. The colors are great, it lands at just the right spot under your hips, and it’s boxy without being shapeless. 2. These long drapey cardigans aren’t always the most flattering but they sure are cozy. Try one made of a thinner material like the draped cardigan from Zara so it’s not quite as bulky. 3. The perfect apres ski sweater from J. Crew. Adorable, right? I’d wear with bright color jeans and boots. 4. Stripes and elbow patches! Nothing to not love about this sweater from J. Crew Factory. 5. I love bold colors and what better way to wear them in winter than this abstract fair isle sweater from J. Crew. 6. Cable knit is the most class sweater and I love the shape of this one from GAP. Ps. All of these sweaters are on sale (and some with an extra percent off!).

What sweaters are you wearing this winter?

Make Your Own Madewell Heartbeat Oversized Button-down Shirt

Madewell-heartbeat-shirt-5

I was poking around the internet for some wardrobe inspiration when I came across this adorable button down from Madewell. Just cute, right? An over-sized button down I could wear with leggings (I love these) or my new faux leather leggings (I bought these).

But $80, really? I decided to take matters into my own hands and simply make my own. It was pretty simple and once the design of the heart was done it was like 20 minutes ladies. I’ll save you the trouble of designing the striped heart in Photoshop like I did and you can save the image below if you want to make your own shirt, too. It’s sized to print on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of iron-on paper, trim the excess paper before you iron on for best results.

Madewell-heartbeat-shirt-Iron-on

Just print on iron-on paper, iron onto an over-sized button down shirt (I used this one from Target), and voila! You have your own Madewell Heartbeat Oversized Button-down for a fraction of the price.

A few notes:
– Be careful of your buttons, it’s not easy to iron-on an image over buttons. I got a shirt with fabric covering the buttons and pockets on the front so I knew I’d have a ton of breaks in the black of the heart so it would be a more rustic look, if you will. If you’re looking for a cleaner look, I suggest removing the buttons before ironing on the image and then re-sweing them back on.
– I used Sharpie (see above image) to fill in a few “too-white” areas, just remember to put a cloth or thick paper in between the front and back of the shirt!
– Don’t do this while distracted! I was distracted by  baby M being cute and therefore burned my shirt a little, bummer! Only hold your iron on your shirt for 20 seconds max.

And because my husband hates taking this sort of photo as much as I hate posing for them – I have a mirror selfie for you showing how I’d style up this shirt. Let me know if you make one!

I haven’t done an outfit post like this in forever – honestly I love doing them but they take a long time to put together and with 2 wee ones who seem to always be in need, my time is not my own and certainly not this blog’s either… BUT! I’ve had my eye on a few things online that I really wanted to share so I decided to round up a little outfit for any upcoming holiday travel you may have this winter.  What will you be wearing?

What to Wear – As a Tourist

While we’re in being tourists in the fabulous city of London this week I thought I’d share with you my thoughts on what to wear while you’re being a tourist. When you’re traveling to a place like London, you know you’ll be out and about all day visiting museums, parks, famous stores (Harrod’s!!), all the while trying to look great because you’ll be posing for tons of photos, trying to be comfortable because you’ll be walking miles, and trying to be dressed for the weather – which – in a place like London is a giant variable.  SO! With all that in mind, here is what I’ll be wearing while being a tourist this week in London. Seeya later mate (trying to fit in a little)!

What-to-wear-as-a-tourist

1. I am addicted to my chambray, similar to this from Madewell so I will absolutely be wearing it a lot on this trip; 2. A cute baseball cap from kate spade Saturday if it’s sunny and you need to protect your face; 3. A necklace because you still want to accessorize while you’re being a tourist! I love this one from Topshop for a pop of color; 4. You should always carry an umbrella in London, it might as well be cute like this one from Anthropologie; 5. A white tank for under my chambray – these BP double scoop neck tanks from Nordstrom are my fave; 6. I love a bright pant – and they look so great with chambray tops, especially in your vacay photos! I love these Toothpick jeans in Fresh Purple from J. Crew; 7. Our good camera – the Nikon D60 for all our photo taking; 8. ;My favorite Silver Sparkle Converse sneakers – the perfect urban sneaker for a gal who loves sparkle and comfort; and 9. A crossbody bag to hold all your stuff and wear comfortably all day. I have one the same shape and size as this kate spade bag and it’s perfect for travel.

What to Wear – Working from Home

Now that my Z is here, I work part-time and excitingly – from home! It sounds like a dream to work from home – roll out of bed, work, work, work, run to the kitchen for coffee, throw in some laundry, work, make yourself lunch in your own kitchen, work, etc…

Well – sometimes the motivation to do that list is hard. I quickly learned that for me, I needed a separate work space (and comfortable, pretty chair, too), defined work hours, and most importantly – shower and dress like I am working with other people in person. You just need that start to your day, that sense of being put-together to have the motivation to be productive. And let me tell you, now that there is NO water cooler chat in my day I am super efficient with my work time.

I’d love to share with you today what I wear when I am working from home – it certainly isn’t the most professional business attire, but it’s put together, fashionable, and makes me not look like I spend the entire day in my own home.

What-to-Wear-Work-from-Home

1. A comfy, stylish top that won’t wrinkle is key while you’re working all day, mostly sitting at a computer. I love this Centerstitch Tee in yellow from Anthropologie; 2. Dyed Linen Scarf with Contrasting Stripe from Zara in case your home office space is cold; 3. Working from home doesn’t mean you don’t need accessories – this J. Crew Crystal and Neon Chevron Bracelet would be great for this outfit; 4. Bottomless cup of delicious homemade coffee in a Marimekko Unikko Turquoise Mug from Crate & Barrel; 5. My work from home uniform usually includes a pair of skinny leg pants in a pattern or color. I love these black and white printed legging skimmer jeans from GAP; 6. Fun stamps from Urban Outfitters to keep yourself amused; and 7. I love these Slingback Boardwalk Sandals from Madewell, easy to throw on at the end of the day when I’m dashing out of the house to pick up Z at the end of my work day.

I was excited to be included in this group of bloggers all writing on the same subject today! Be sure to click through their posts too and get really inspired to still dress snazzy while you’re working from home.

What to Wear – Summer Denim

I’ve already declared that in place of regular denim I like to wear white jeans in the summer. But then I was perusing the internet and found these amazing, lightweight jeans and I think I spoke too soon! I love the pattern of these pants that from afar look like they might be a blue tribal pattern…but close up you see that they are in fact floral. There is also piping down each leg to give them a tuxedo pant effect. So original! I had to think of an outfit idea and share them with you, you may be surprised, but I went mostly neutral to let the pants really shine. Let me know what you think and if you’d wear these pants in place of your heavier denim for summer.

What-to-Wear-Summer-Denim

1. Silk Cargo Tank from Madewell, worn loosely tucked in; 2. This navy Fan Necklace from J. Crew Factory makes the look; 3. Simple cardigan from J.Crew Factory, the pop of bright green looks great with the pants.; 4. The outfit would look great with my favorite navy nail essie‘s Bobbing for Baubles; 5. The pants! Looker Skinny Jeans from Mother at Shopbop; 6. My sister just got a new Tory Burch so that inspired me to pair this outfit with one of Tory‘s new Straw Basket Tote Bags for summer. I love the whole line but this one looks great with this outfit; and 7. I’ve been coveting these Studded espadrille slip-ons from Zara. You know how I love espadrilles…
