Gingerbread Saturday

Gingerbread men have been a major discussion point this Christmas season. They focus on gingerbread at Z’s school because it seems as though gingerbread men are a safe, non-specific holiday theme that everyone can enjoy no matter what holiday you celebrate. They’ve made gingerbread men, read books about them, craft projects, you name it. So when I heard that the Cottage in Chestnut Hill was hosting a gingerbread breakfast this past weekend I thought it would be fun to make a whole day of it. And I took a few photos so I could share here!

The breakfast was cute – breakfast buffet, hot chocolate with marshmallows for the kids, and treats to take home in goody bags.

There was a station to decorate your own gingerbread man cookie…

…which seemed to be the highlight for the kids.

The photo booth area with the gingerbread man was adorable, although the guy in the costume made the gingerbread look angry and melting.

Then we hopped in the car and drove into Boston. Our first stop was to the Taj to see their Boston Tea Party scene that was made completely out of gingerbread. It was awesome! They even had the boxes of tea “floating” in the water.

Impressive.

Our last stop was the Boston Public Library and their new children’s wing, which was so fun – big, a nice play area, tons of books, and a really fun stage area with huge window overlooking Exeter Street.

We found some gingerbread books to read, played, and called it a day. Fun!

Exciting News (New Job!)

I like to get dressed. And, even more so, I like to get my kids dressed. So, as it were, when I saw a job posted on a moms group I follow on Facebook to be a stylist for Mac & Mia, I thought – that is for ME! Mac & Mia is a clothing delivery service for children ages 0 to 6 (much like Stitch Fix, if you’re familiar). You give me details about your kids (she hates red and will only wear dresses and skirts, for example) and I fill a box of 8 to 10 clothing pieces and send them to you. You look them over, try them on your child, keep and pay for what you like, and send back the rest. Easy! Convenient! And oh so fun for me!

It’s a part-time, work from home job which makes it even that much more appealing and the only way it would work with our little family right now.

Mac & Mia has tons of clothing brands I work with to find just the right pieces for your little ones. Some favorite brands like JoJo Maman Bebe and Hatley. Some new to me brands like Angel Dear (for babies, SO cute). And of course they’re all fun brands like Pink Chicken.

So…that’s what’s new, it was time I shared! If you’re interested in signing up and learning more you can use my direct link for Mac & Mia here. Or my stylist code is JessJ.

12 Days of Christmas Tops, day 10: Not every party calls for sequins and glitter so today’s top is perfect for a casual get together or afternoon decorating the tree with your family. I love this Wildfox Rockin Around tee from Bloomingdales.  Adorable, comfy, and super festive.

12 Days of Christmas Tops, day 9: This stripe sequin top from kate spade is perfect! It mimics a candy cane in the most adorable way. Full disclosure, I don’t usually like to post things i wouldn’t actually buy myself (and at nearly $500 I will not be adding this to my wardrobe) but sometimes it’s fun to just get inspiration from a piece of clothing and hunt around for a less expensive version somewhere else.

Toddler Craft Project – Salt Dough Ornaments

salt-dough-ornaments-6

I’ve continued to do our monthly toddler crafts with my local Baby Bootcamp franchise (past projects here) but I have been terrible about blogging and sharing them. But this month’s salt dough ornaments are so cute I just had to share!! I thought it would be fun for each kid to make a keepsake item for their family or to give as a gift this season and decided salt dough ornaments was the perfect idea. Salt dough is easy to make; it’s just a 2 to 1 to 1 ratio of flour to salt to warm water. You mix all the ingredients until a dough is formed and then roll out and cut into shapes as you would cookies. (Official recipe: 2C flour, 1C salt, 1C warm water. Whisk flour and salt. Add water slowly while mixing. Kneed dough for 10 minutes).

You can use cookie cutters or free hand shapes – we shaped letters by rolling the dough into a snake shape and molding into letters. It’s also a cute idea to create a flat ball and get a hand or footprint of your child too. Note – if your end result is an ornament you’ll want to use a straw to make a hole in it at this point too to string and hang later.

Once your shapes are created you want to bake the dough low and slow (low oven temp, long cook time). For this dough that was about 1/8″ thick it was about an hour and a half of baking at 200 degrees. You don’t want to make the oven any hotter or the dough will brown.

Once out of the oven and cooled it’s time to decorate! You can draw with marker or get really into it (as we did here) and use acrylic paint and glue with sparkles. Be creative! These are great as gifts to grandparents but also as a gift tag on a present for someone like a teacher or friend.

Once paint and/or glitter has dried, seal with spray clear acrylic sealer. Salt dough ornaments are the perfect afternoon activity for your toddler or preschooler to keep them busy during these over-excited weeks leading up to Christmas!
