Office Chair Reupholster

photo (3)

In my new home office space, I was using an old, giant office chair…with wheels.  I like a nice stationary chair as I work so I decided to take an old, stained chair from our basement and reupholster to make it seem new!  I went to a little fabric shop down the street and found the best upholstery fabrics, it was SO hard to choose.  I thought I’d share the process with you, let’s start with the finished project, didn’t it come out cute?

I had never reupholstered anything – ever.  So first step was to research how.  I found great instructions from the blog Little Green Notebook, the most important part for me, the how-to on corners. I was only doing the seat cushion of this chair, so once it was stripped of the old fabric, I was ready to staple on the new.

Pull tight, staple.

Then came the tricky part of creating a good-looking corner.  Turns out it’s fairly easy:

Staple up from the corner at a 45 degree angle on both pieces of fabric that have come together at the corner.
Snip off extra fabric from both sides, leaving a little tab long enough to pull up and staple.
Pull the tab up and staple.
Ta-dah…
Perfect corner!

Once the fabric was stapled on, I just reattached it to the chair and voila – it looks great!  The back of the chair was not able to be reupholstered so I made a little pillow with leftover fabric (and that cute polka dot gray fabric!), I think it really adds to the chair – and is comfy on my back.

Homemade (sort of) Cat Costume for the Baby

Happy Halloween!  Our sweet baby is going to be a black cat for Halloween this year.  Instead of telling you I “made” the costume, I’ll say I “crafted” it.

It was so easy – black onesie, silver sparkle-y foam paper, and the cat accessories pack from Target.  Oh, and I found this cute little pumpkin for $1 for her to collect her candy as we go door to door tonight – literally door to door.  We’ll visit the neighbors next door, the neighbors across the street, and then head home.  Not bad for baby’s first Halloween!  Well, technically, she was born the day before Halloween last year, so it’s her 2nd Halloween, but we didn’t dress up last year and we certainly didn’t trick or treat as we were all still at the hospital.

Happy First Birthday Sweet Baby Girl!

She’s ONE!  We can’t believe how fast this year has gone…and that our sweet baby girl is quickly becoming a wild climbing toddler!  I thought I would share a visual recap of her birthday party with you…she had a blast and LOVED her cake!

The theme of the party was sock monkeys because our little one is such a monkey using her feet and toes as she plays as much has her hands.  Then the color theme was the four colors you see below.  I didn’t decorate too much, here was the focal point…

The silver balloon is a GIANT #1.  And plush sock monkeys served a dual role of balloon weight and party favor.

Here are some close-ups, all the decorations were easy, cheap, and on theme!

I made sock monkeys using white chocolate to trace the outline with sprinkles on top to add color.

Once the chocolate sets, it’s very easy to get the monkeys (or whatever shape) off the wax paper.

I got one of those paper tablecloths from iparty and stamped the little sock monkey all over it.

I used the chocolate monkeys to decorate the cake…

and made letters using the same technique with the white chocolate and sprinkles.  And this post from Oh Happy Day was SO helpful to me to finally frost a smooth cake.

Happy Birthday to our little monkey!!

Monday Outfit

We’re braving the elements this morning and hoping Sandy stays calm until later in the day so I can go to my eye doctor appointment.  How exciting.  At least I get to break out my bright yellow raincoat and navy wellies, similar to the ones below.  I hope Sandy isn’t too rough on all of us today, have a great week!

Couple Things…

I am so excited for the weekend, tomorrow we are hosting our sweet baby girl’s FIRST BIRTHDAY PARTY!  You’ve seen the inspiration and the invitation and below is the cute t-shirt we had made from an etsy seller that she’ll wear to celebrate her big day.  Next week I’ll show you the rest of the fun.

Have a great weekend!  Here are a couple things from the web this week:

kate spade is launching a new brand of apparel, accessories, and home items this Spring!

I love this coat for Fall…

And this sweet dress for the baby…can you tell I’m into Zara right now?

And last, a little something for those of us who watch Breaking Bad (and like Taylor Swift, apparently.)

Caramelized Apple Crepes

Apples 4

For weeks, maybe over a month, our baby girl has been taking epic 2-hour naps bright and early in the morning, a little over an hour after she gets up.  During the week it allows me to get some work done.  On the weekend, it allows my husband and I to lazily read the Sunday paper or make an extravagant breakfast.  This past weekend we did the latter.  We used some of our self-picked apples to make Caramelized Apple Crepes.  You can use a mix for the crepe part, or, like us, if you discover you haven’t made crepes in a while and your mix expired 2 years ago, you can make them from scratch.  Either way – SO GOOD!

Caramelized Apple Crepes
from Martha Stewart Living, October 1996

1/2 C all-purpose flour
Pinch of salt
2 large eggs
1 large egg yolk
1 1/4 C milk
1 1/2 Tsp pure vanilla extract
6 Tbs unsalted butter
6 crisp apples, such as Mutsu, peeled, quartered, and cut into 1-inch chunks
1 Tbs grated lemon zest (1 lemon)
2 Tbs lemon juice (1 lemon)
1/2 Tsp cinnamon
1/2 Tsp ground ginger
6 Tbs sugar
3 Tbs Calvados or brandy
1 C creme fraiche (we didn’t use creme fraiche)
3 Tbs confectioners’ sugar, plus more for dusting

In a medium bowl, sift together flour and salt. Whisk in eggs, egg yolk, and about 1 tablespoon milk, forming a smooth batter with a pastelike consistency. Add remaining milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla; mix until no lumps remain. Melt 4 tablespoons butter in a nonstick skillet, and stir into the batter; leave a film of butter in the skillet. Let the batter rest at room temperature about 30 minutes.
 Apples 2
Heat oven to warm. Over medium-low heat, warm the skillet thoroughly. Stir batter, and carefully ladle about 1/4 cup batter into skillet. Rotate skillet so batter spreads out and thinly coats the bottom and edges of the skillet. Return skillet to heat, and cook crepe until edges turn golden brown and lacy, and start to pull away from the skillet, about 2 minutes.
Apples 3
Using a knife or an offset spatula, carefully turn crepe over; cook other side until just golden, 30 to 40 seconds. Slide the crepe onto a heat-proof plate. Repeat with the remaining batter, stirring it before making another crepe. Stack cooked crepes on top of one another. Loosely cover plate of crepes with aluminum foil, and place in the oven to keep warm.
Place apples in a medium bowl. Add lemon zest, lemon juice, cinnamon, and ginger. Toss to coat.
Apples 1
Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons butter in a 12-inch cast-iron skillet set over medium heat. Add granulated sugar, and cook, stirring occasionally, until sugar turns amber in color, about 5 minutes. If caramel starts to get too dark, remove skillet from heat. Add apples, and cook, turning apples over, until soft and completely caramelized. Pour Calvados into a measuring cup, then pour into skillet. Carefully ignite the alcohol, and allow the flame to burn out, 2 to 3 minutes, shaking skillet to toss the apples in the syrup. Remove apples from heat; let cool slightly.
Combine creme fraiche, remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, and confectioners’ sugar in a chilled mixing bowl. Whip mixture until light, fluffy, and almost doubled in volume.
Remove the crepes from oven, and transfer to six serving plates. Spoon a scant 1/2 cup caramelized apples onto each crepe, and dust lightly with confectioners’ sugar. Spoon a generous amount of creme-fraiche mixture over apples. Fold crepes, and serve immediately.

Enjoy!
