A bunch of my husband’s buddies (or so it seems) are getting married this fall which means 2 things: 1. lots of fun nights out to attend these weddings and 2. lots of getting all dolled up in our fanciest clothes! I never seem to have trouble finding what clothes to wear since I’ve been relatively the same size since high school and have a pretty good collection of wedding-appropriate-dresses and shoes. It’s really, for me, how to complete the dressed up outfit with an equally dressed up hair style.I’m horrible at styling my own hair, or maybe just ignorant. I watch hair tutorials on other blogs and I think “my hair is too thick for that” or “my hair is too short for that” or “that looks super complicated.” So for dressier events such as a wedding I always end up just straightening my already straight hair and maybe putting in a cute bobby pin and calling it done.
You can only imagine how THRILLED I was to hear about Be Styled blowdry bar opening in Chestnut Hill and Wellesley. For $35 you can pop in and get your hair washed and styled in 40 minutes. And the experience is just…so…relaxing and indulgent. You’re offered a mimosa or cappuccino when you arrive…and then pass by the candy bar to grab a little snack. And after your hair wash, you sit in a chair and watch movies on the big screens (SATC2 was on when I was there) or play with a BeStyled iPad.
I mean – what a great way to spend a Saturday morning AND you come out looking fab.
In theory a blowdry should last for 3 days but after my day that included an outdoor cocktail hour followed by dancing all night…I was desperate for a ponytail when I got up the next morning, ya know…
PS. The wedding was a blast…

I mentioned quite a few weeks ago that we made this summer version of eggplant parm. Well – you can really make it any season and it’s actually just a healthier version of the traditional breaded and fried eggplant parm. And it’s stacked. Who doesn’t like dinner in a stack? Here’s how we made it in four simple steps:
Season your eggplant with salt and pepper and grill it, about 2 – 4 mins/side.
Slice your mozzarella.
Stack your dinner – eggplant, then mozzarella, continue…
Pour your sauce over and done! We used our fave homemade marinara sauce for ours. Enjoy!
It’s kind of exciting when a Whole Foods Market opens in the town where you live. I was invited to tour the new store last night in Arlington, MA and I jumped at the chance! The store doesn’t open to the public until tomorrow – there is a bread breaking ceremony at 9:45am and then the store opens at 10am. But I am going to give you a sneak peek! In full disclosure, this is just me telling you about what I think are the most fabulous parts of the new store – this is NOT a sponsored post – I’m being neighborly!
It was interesting to tour a store that wasn’t open because there were vastly empty areas like the fish counter and produce department and other areas filled to the brim like the middle of the store where the packaged foods are. The store seems to have a small footprint but still filled the brim with everything you’d want from a Whole Foods…
Yummy prepared foods section including a Burrito bar…
…and unique to this location – a fresh pasta counter! I can’t wait for fresh pasta, what a great idea.
In celebration of the opening there are great doorbuster sales all week on swordfish, boneless rib-eye steak, and tomato clusters.
Of course being Whole Foods, they are already very tied to the community. They’re even selling Minuteman Mix ice cream from local ice cream shop Chilly Cow (we love this place)! And, better yet, 1% of sales from the opening day will support local charities like Arlington Boys and Girls Club, Arlington Center for the Arts, and more. You know I’ll be back for opening day!
On our way home from a fun day with family yesterday we popped into Wendy’s to try the Smoky Honey Mustard Flatbread Chicken Sandwich. The flatbread was really good (and only 370 calories) – so much so that all of Z’s *friends wanted to try it too…

I mentioned Friday that we got a boat load of peppers, a pint of tomatillos, AND a bunch of cilantro in our CSA a couple weeks ago so it’s like the farm was beckoning us to make salsa verde – so we did! Salsa verde is a green sauce or green salsa. You can add as many jalapenos and/or serranos as you’d like to taste. It’s fairly simple to make, here’s how you do it…
Peel your tomatillos, we were surprised at how sticky the skin under the peel is.
Roast the tomatillos for just 5 to 8 minutes under the broiler until the skin gets browned.
In the meantime, prep the rest of your ingredients: dice 1/2 an onion, a bunch of cilanro, 1/2 a lime, dash of sugar, salt, and chop your peppers – again, add as many as your desired spicey level.
Once your tomatillos are cooled, blend everything together!
Serve with chips…
…or on your favorite Mexican dish, like these fajitas. Enjoy!
Candy Corn Oreos are back! We missed the boat last year so I was excited to come across a few remaining packages at my local Target.
I finally had some time to spend reading my September issue this week, have you finished yours?
New swinging method at the playground.
1) Scream-inducing spider. 2) I need to dust.
Z is starting gymnastics soon, she’ll obviously dress the part.
We got tons of varieties of peppers from our CSA this week including this tiny but potent chili pepper…salsa recipe on the blog next week!
Have a great weekend everyone!
To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure how I feel about another fall trend I’ve been seeing around – plaid. See, in high school I wore a plaid uniform skirt every day. Every. Day. My only other uniform bottoms option was a pair of plaid dress shorts. You read right – dress shorts. Only these weren’t the modern-day, short, cute, dress shorts, these were old fashioned, knee-length pleated shorts and in all honesty they were actually plaid culottes. Exactly.
Ok – either way, I was wearing plaid on the bottom every day of high school (minus a few uniform holidays every year) – that’s a lot of plaid. So, when I have been seeing plaid pop up everywhere this season, it’s with mixed emotions that I jump on this trend. I have searched high and low and have found a random assortment of acceptable-in-my-book plaid items for your viewing pleasure. And – because I’m in a sharing mood this week, I have also included a photo of an actual photo of me in my high school plaid. PS. there is no photographic evidence of me ever wearing the culottes so don’t even ask. =)
1. You already know how I feel about smoking slippers, so these Joie Pointed Toe Smoking Flats in Daydreaming Plaid from Bloomingdale’s are a plaid YES! 2. This Penfield Wayland Denim Trail Shirt from Madewell is adorable, just enough plaid to say you’ve participated in the trend. 3. I am sort of obsessed with iPhone cases so this cute blue plaid iPhone case from Society 6 totally made the list. 4. These kate spade Saturday Skinny Jeans in Painted Plaid are so cool, they don’t even count as traditional plaid. 5. Who could pass on these classic Ray-Ban – Original Wayfarer Sunglasses in Top Red with a little hidden plaid on the inside? Not me! 6. I had to include this Marc by Marc Jacobs Preppy Nylon Aimee Plaid Mini Natasha Bag – he is all over the plaid trend this season and used this class red plaid everywhere in his designs.
Sorry it’s so tiny (I have no photos of me in my uniform it turns out, I ripped apart the basement searching!) and I’m sitting on my car – that’s a story for another day! But, you get the idea of the plaid – plus I’m wearing knee socks guys.
